2 Euro Belgium 2021-500 years of the existence of the first pieces of Charles Quint

On February 24, 1500, Charles Quint saw the day at the Court of the Princes of Ghent. From then on, until his death in 1558, the young prince became one of the greatest rulers of all time. At fifteen, he became Lord of the Netherlands, a year later King of Spain and, before his twentieth anniversary, Emperor of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire.

Thus, in 1521, the golden florin Carolus entered. A silver Carolus florin will follow later in 1540. After Charles Quint's abdication to his son Philippe in 1566, his play will no longer be struck... Until now!

In 1521 Charles V introduced a 20 pence gold florin, a new unit of account: the carolus florin. In 1543, a silver carolus florin was also introduced. After Charles V's abdication, the pieces were no longer struck. However, the florin (carolus) has long remained in use in the Netherlands as a term and account unit.

On the right side of the room is a bust of Emperor Charles V (Carolus V) looking to the left. He wears his beret in velvet typical of the Renaissance and his toge lined with fur. Around his neck hangs the chain with the jewel of the order of the gold fleece. He looks at the golden Carolus Gulden, the piece that celebrates his fifth centenary. On the left, we find the EB country designation and 2021. Text: CAROLUS V.

Under the different from the Royal Mint of the Netherlands (the mercury stick), the different from the Mint Commissioner (the coat of arms of the commune of Herzele) and LL (the initials of designer Luc Luycx).
