The125th Anniversary of the Birth of Frans Eemil Sillanpää

Born in 1888, Frans Eemil Sillanpää is a Finnish writer, novelist and newlist, a follower of psychological neo-realism. His main novel, Sainte Misère (1919), evokes the Finnish Civil War. His success at the time was due to his characters from the small people of rural Finland: maids, metayers or small owners. One of his poems, written in 1939, was put into music in 1940 to form a patriotic song, Sillanpää (Sillanpään marssilaulu).
