All countries of the European Union using the euro issued the 1er January 2009 a commemorative coin of 2 € to commemorate the 10e anniversary of theEconomic and Monetary Union.
The center of the room illustrates a stylized human figure whose left arm is extended by the symbol of the euro. Initials Σ by George Stamatopoulos, the engraver artist appears under the symbol of the euro. The name of the issuing country appears in the upper part, while the indication 1999-2009 and translation of acronym UEM appear in the lower part. The outer ring of the coin represents the twelve stars of the European flag.
An exception exists for Luxembourg where the law requires that the portrait of the Grand Duke appear on all the pieces, the portrait of the Grand Duke will therefore appear as a watermark on the piece. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the head of state (the king or queen) to appear on all the pieces, was amended to participate in this commemoration, this amendment is only valid for common emissions.
