The drawing of the sun created by the artist Ansis Cirlis in 1915 was reproduced for the first time in the roles of the battalion of Latvian riflemen and in the flag of the 1st battalion of Latvian riflemen of Daugavgriva. In 1917, the artist created an autonomous symbol of Latvia (a land on which a sun rises with broken rays).
It was the beginning of one of the key elements of Latvian national blazon. The theme of the rising sun is used several times by Ans Cirlis in his work, incl. in the first Latvian State stamp and interior decorations (for example, in the room of the Riga Castle).
