Description:
To mark Christmas 2025, the Vatican City State Mint is presenting a particularly original issue: a rectangular 25-euro silver coin, sublimated by color applications. With its unusual format, artistic treatment and spiritual dimension, this creation is one of the Vatican's most singular issues dedicated to the Nativity.
The coin is the result of a collaboration between the Vatican Mint, the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato italiano and the Scuola dell'Arte della Medaglia. This partnership highlights the excellence of Italian know-how in engraving, minting and artistic creation. It also underscores the Vatican's desire to encourage the next generation of artists, by giving pride of place to young talent from this prestigious school.
The coin's design was created by artist Giada Reale, selected from among the best scholarship students at the Scuola dell'Arte della Medaglia. Her work is inspired by theAdoration of the Shepherds, a composition attributed to the workshop of the Flemish master Pieter van Aelst. This 16th-century work, housed in the Vatican Museums, is closely linked to the artistic world of the Renaissance and the tradition of the Raphael School.
Through this contemporary reinterpretation, the Nativity scene takes on both a classical and contemporary dimension. The birth of Christ is evoked as a moment of light, hope and renewal. The encounter between the divine and humanity becomes the heart of the visual message: a moment of peace and harmony, when Christmas appears as a promise addressed to the whole world.
The use of color reinforces the expressive scope of this program. Colored applications bring depth, softness and modernity to the composition, while respecting the solemnity of the religious subject. They bring out the details of the scene and offer a more vivid reading of the work, between pictorial tradition and contemporary numismatic language.
The case designed to house the coin is also an important element of this issue. More than just a presentation box, it is an integral part of the artistic project. Accompanied by an informative booklet, it offers collectors a real immersion in the history, symbolism and stages of creation of the coin. The booklet explains the spiritual meaning of the issue, the institutional collaboration, Giada Reale's artistic work, the technical aspects of production and the reference to the Adoration of the Shepherds tapestry.
With this 25 euro silver coin dedicated to Christmas 2025, the Vatican celebrates faith, beauty and artistic transmission. This issue is a reminder that numismatics can become a cultural and spiritual medium in its own right, capable of bringing together ancient heritage, contemporary creation and a universal message. It is aimed at collectors sensitive to Vatican coins, lovers of sacred art and anyone looking for a meaningful coin combining Christian tradition, artistic innovation and manufacturing excellence.
