German Euro Coins: Emblems of National Heritage and European Unity
Germany, with its rich history and central role in Europe, has ensured that each of its euro coins reflects its tradition and commitment to European solidarity.
Detailed description of coin designs:
1, 2 and 5 centime coins: These coins feature an oak branch with five leaves and two acorns. The year is engraved at the base of the branch, and the whole is surrounded by the 12 stars of the European flag, recessed in a ring. The branch, designed by Rolf Lederbogen, evokes the old German pfennigs, on which oak leaves were a symbol of robustness.
10, 20 and 50 cent coins: The Brandenburg Gate, a poignant symbol of Berlin and of German and European reunification, is proudly depicted. The year is engraved just above this emblematic structure. The 12 stars of the European flag encircle the design in a ring. Reinhard Heinsdorff is the artist behind this engraving.
1 and 2 euro coins: These feature the German heraldic eagle, a major national symbol, positioned above the year of issue. The 12 European stars encircle the eagle on a slightly horizontally striated outer ring. The design was created by Heinz Hoyer and Sneschana Russewa-Hoyer.
Although the name of Germany does not appear on the coins, a letter is engraved to identify the mint:
- A: Staatliche Münze Berlin of Berlin
- D: Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt, Munich
- F: Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart
- G: Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg, Karlsruhe
- J: Hamburgische Münze, Hamburg
Beyond their monetary value, these coins are a window on German history and culture, and illustrate the country's ongoing commitment to European vision and values.
