ANDORRA

Andorra, a microstate adopting the Euro

Andorra is a southern European state. Bordered by Spain and France, Andorra's location in the Pyrenees makes it a predominantly high-mountain state.

It is one of Europe's smallest sovereign states, with a surface area of 468 km2 and an estimated population of 85,458 in 2014.

Andorra is the only country in Europe (along with Monaco) where nationals are in the minority.

Before the creation of the euro, Andorra used the Spanish peseta and the French franc. The principality was not allowed to mint its own currency, and this prohibition continued when the euro replaced the Spanish and French currencies.

Since July 1, 2013, the Principality has not been able to issue banknotes, but it can issue euro coins

However, it will do so officially on January 15, 2015, by issuing euro coins with the 2014 vintage (delay encountered in manufacturing to meet European Union requirements).

Andorran coins are minted by the Monnaie de Paris and the Spanish Mint Real Casa de la Moneda.
