MALTA

Euro coins from Malta: Symbols of a deep-rooted history

Perched in the heart of the Mediterranean, the island of Malta, with its thousand-year-old history, adopted the euro in 2008, succeeding the Maltese lira. The distinctive designs chosen for its coins reveal a mosaic of the nation's cultural and historical treasures.

Maltese coins offer a journey through the country's history. Small denomination coins, namely 1, 2 and 5 centimes, feature the altar of the megalithic temple of Mnajdra. These coins depict this ancient edifice, set with a decorative band and accompanied by the words "MALTA" and the year, all encircled by the EU's emblematic stars.

Moving to intermediate denominations, the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins proudly display the Maltese coat of arms. These coats of arms are surmounted by the word "MALTA" on the left and the year on the right. The whole, surrounded by stars, is distinguished by a striated background that evokes the texture of the island's rich history.

Finally, the 1 and 2 euro coins reveal a poignant symbol: the Maltese Cross. This cross, engraved on a vertically striated background, is surmounted by the name of the country and underlined by the year, surrounded, as always, by the stars of the European Union.

Each of these coins tells a story, reflecting Malta's fusion of ancient heritage and contemporary European identity. In this section, you'll find all the euro coins issued since the adoption of the euro in 2008 (BU, BE, 2 Euro Commemorative sets, etc.)
