Latvian Euro Coins: A Mix of Heritage and Modernity
As a member of Northern Europe, Latvia seamlessly integrated into the Eurozone in 2014, replacing the Latvian lats. The changeover to the euro marked an opportunity for Latvia to celebrate its rich history through the carefully chosen designs of its new coins.
1, 2 and 5 cent coins: These coins feature Latvia's small coat of arms. They feature a sun overhung by three stars, representing the country's three historical regions. The designation "LATVIJA" is inscribed underneath. The year is on the left, framed by the 12 stars of the European Union. These coins were designed by Laimonis Šēnbergs.
10, 20 and 50 centime coins: These proudly display the full Latvian coat of arms. A lion and griffin support a shield adorned with a sun, with three stars above, again symbolizing the three historical regions. The year is divided on both sides by the coat of arms, with "LATVIJA" inscribed below. These coins are the joint work of Laimonis Šēnbergs and Jānis Strupulis.
1 and 2 euro coins: These unveil the effigy of Milda, an allegorical figure of Latvia, already present on the 5-lat coins of 1929. Turning to the right, she is framed by the inscription "LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA". The year is engraved on the left, surrounded by the 12 stars of the EU on the outer ring. Guntars Sietiņš contributed his talent to this engraving.
Beyond their monetary value, these Latvian euro coins embody the national heritage, pride and history of a vibrant country at the heart of Europe.
