The €1 and €2 coins show the portrait of a Latvian maiden originally used on the reverse of the silver 5 lats coin of 1929.
Historical and cultural context:
Latvian euro coins continue a national numismatic tradition: the portrait of the Latvian Maiden revives an emblematic motif from the pre-war lats, while the smaller denominations display the state coat of arms.
