BELGIUM
Belgium and the adoption of the Euro
Belgium, a country located in Western Europe, played a major role in the adoption of the euro as the single currency. Since its introduction on January 1, 2002, the euro has replaced the Belgian franc as the country's official means of payment. The evolution of Belgian euro coins is marked by unique designs featuring the effigy of the King of the Belgians, accompanied by his monogram. Four distinct series of coins have been issued, reflecting the different periods of reign of the Belgian sovereigns.
The first series of coins, issued from 1999 to 2013, features the effigy of King Albert II. These coins mark the transition from the Belgian franc to the euro, and bear the hallmark of the Commissioner of Coins in office at the time of minting. They were struck with the helmeted archangel Saint-Michel, the emblematic symbol of the Royal Mint of Belgium.
Since 2014, a new series of coins has been introduced to reflect the reign of King Philippe. This series features King Philippe's effigy accompanied by his monogram. A special feature of these coins is that they are minted in Utrecht, the Netherlands, which has led to the replacement of the helmeted Archangel Saint Michael by the Dutch caduceus on the coins.
These series of Belgian euro coins bear witness to the country's historical and cultural evolution, while celebrating the sovereigns who have marked these different periods. The unique designs and meticulous details of each coin make them not only means of payment, but also captivating artistic and historical testimonies.
