Despite its small size, Belgium is a veritable festival paradise in Europe. With over 11.6 million inhabitants spread over just 30,688 km2, the country is known for hosting a multitude of festivals. Famous names such as Tomorrowland, Pukkelpop and Rock Werchter attract large audiences, but there are also many smaller festivals where fans are spoilt for choice. Tickets for the next festival season are in high demand, and Belgian festivals attract an international audience.
Belgium holds the world record for the highest number of music festivals per capita. The world's greatest artists enjoy performing in this country, attracting a varied and international audience. Take the example of the Pukkelpop festival: in 1985, its first edition lasted one day and offered a variety of musical genres for just 400 Belgian francs. In 2023, the festival will last four days and feature huge artists in front of some 80,000 visitors. With the growing success of festivals, ticket prices have also risen.
The typically Belgian festival culture is highly appreciated the world over, attracting not only international audiences, but also Belgians themselves. Festivals are an ideal way of bringing different generations together and showcasing Belgium through its music and culture. To celebrate this unique festival culture, a 2½-euro coin has been created.
The 2½-euro coin, presented in "accessible" packaging, features on the front a hand making the "rock on" gesture, surrounded by concert speakers, musical notes, a guitar and an equalizer. In the background is a map of Belgium. Below the guitar, the text "BELGIAN FESTIVAL CULTURE" is inscribed. The reverse of the coin displays the usual graphic elements such as the value, the year and the European map. The colorful, festive packaging is inspired by the festival atmosphere. The coincard in which the coin is presented features various festival bracelets, which are often used as entrance tickets and worn by many around the arm. The reverse of the coincarde features colorful elements characteristic of festivals.
This resounding 2½ euro coin is a tribute to Belgian festival culture, representing the joyful, dynamic spirit of these musical events.
