2 Euro MONACO
2 Euro Commemorative Monaco
Monaco is the second smallest independent state in the world after the Vatican . Monegasque euro coins are legal tender in the euro zone, and have replaced the Monegasque franc since January 1, 2002. Following an agreement with France, the Principality of Monaco has been authorized to issue circulation coins and collector coins denominated in euros since that date. The quality of the coins, and the very low mintage, quickly attracted the interest and covetousness of collectors and speculators, who saw in these rarities the possibility of making a profit. The first Monegasque coins saw the light of day in January 2001, in starterskits available to the public for purchase at post offices and tobacconists.
It wasn't until 2007 that Monaco released its first commemorative €2 coin on the theme of Princess Grace Kelly, in BU quality, in a limited edition of 20,001 pieces, sold in a boxed set by the Monaco Stamp and Coin Museum. Other commemorative coins were released in circulation in bank rolls in 2011 and 2012, on the themes of the Princely Wedding and the Sovereign Lucien 1er, respectively.
The Monegasque State will regularly mint coins for the collection on a variety of themes:
- 2013 20 years of admission to the UN, 2015 800 years of the Monegasque fortress
- 2016 150 years of the founding of Monte Carlo by Charles III
- 2017 200 years of the Carabinieri
- 2018 250th anniversary of the birth of François-Joseph Bosio
- 2019 200th anniversary of Prince Honoré V's accession to the throne
- 2020 300th anniversary of the birth of Prince Honoré III
- 2021 10 years of marriage of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène, scheduled for release in late September 2021, early October 2021.
