2 Euro 2022 - Erasmus Program: Celebrating 35 years of Exchanges

The year 2022 marks an important moment for Europe, with the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus program. This celebration will take shape through a series of commemorative 2 euro coins issued by all euro zone member states, featuring a common design. The series comprises 23 coins, including those minted in Germany's 5 mints.

The approach to this initiative was innovative, involving the citizens of the European Union in the choice of design. Following an online vote, from among six design proposals, the winning design was created by renowned Monnaie de Paris engraver Joaquin Jimenez. His work highlights two key elements: the original intellectual inspiration, personified by Erasmus of Rotterdam, and the impact of this program on the whole of Europe.

The central motif of the piece features the portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam, an emblematic figure of European scholarship. The other part of the design represents, through a network of connections, the countless intellectual and human exchanges that have enriched the lives of European students.
