Vatican Euro Coins: Witness to Pontifical Succession and Ecclesiastical History
Through the ages and pontificates, Vatican euro coins illustrate the evolution of the papacy, reflecting both constancy of faith and changes in spiritual leadership.
1st series (2002-2005): John Paul II
Sculptor Guido Veroi immortalized John Paul II with a detailed engraving by Uliana Pernazza. The pope's bust is framed by the inscription "CITTA' DEL VATICANO".
2nd series (2005): Sede vacante
After the death of John Paul II and before the election of Benedict XVI, a special series was issued. It shows the coat of arms of Cardinal Camerlingue, Eduardo Martínez Somalo, with the inscription ".SEDE.VACANTE.MMV. " at the top and "CITTA' DEL VATICANO" at the bottom.
3rd series (2006-2013): Benedict XVI
The face of Benedict XVI appears on each of the eight pieces, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union. Various artists contributed to the engraving, with the words "CITTA' DEL VATICANO" and the year displayed.
4th series (2014-2016): Francis - Effigy
Following the election of Pope Francis, a new series is dedicated to him. His portrait varies slightly depending on the denomination. The legend "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO", the vintage and the R mint mark are also present. The 2 euro coin specially dedicated to the previous "Sede vacante" period is notably absent from this series.
5th series (2017- ) : François - Coat of arms
From 2017, the effigy of Pope Francis is replaced by his pontifical coat of arms, in respect of his wishes. The usual inscription, the year, and the mint mark R adorn the coin. The twelve stars of the European Union form an outer ring, completing the design.
These Vatican coins are not simply monetary units; they are witnesses to a living history, capturing the essence of each pontificate for posterity.
