BU Vatican 2023 9-coin set

This set includes the 1 Cent to 2€ coins for the year 2023, featuring the coat of arms of Pope Francis I (shield), as well as the 5€ coin commemorating the centenary of the death of Don Lorenzo Milani.

Don Lorenzo Milani (1923-1967) was an Italian Catholic priest and educator known for his radical pedagogical ideas and social activism. He is particularly famous for his work as a teacher in the impoverished Tuscan town of Barbiana, where he created a community school that emphasized the importance of critical thinking, political awareness and social justice.

Milani was born in Florence in 1923 and ordained a priest in 1947. He began his teaching career in 1954, working in a public school in the Tuscan town of San Donato in Collina. There, he became disillusioned with the Italian education system, which emphasized memorization and repetition rather than comprehension and critical thinking. In response, Milani set up an alternative school in Barbiana in 1958, in which pupils were encouraged to develop their own critical thinking, explore social problems and engage in actions for social change. Milani wrote numerous books on education and society, and is considered one of the most influential pedagogues of twentieth-century Italy.
