BULGARIA
Bulgaria, a country adopting the Euro
Bulgaria is a state in Southeast Europe. Bordered by Romania, Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea, its location on the Balkan Peninsula makes it a country of varied landscapes, combining plains, plateaus and mountain ranges.
It is a medium-sized European state, with a surface area of 110,994 km² and an estimated population of around 6.5 million.
A member of theEuropean Union since 2007, Bulgaria officially adopted the euro on January 1, 2026, becoming a member of the Eurozone.
Before adopting the euro, Bulgaria used the Bulgarian lev, the national currency in circulation since the XIXᵉ century. Since 1997, the lev had already been indexed to the euro by a fixed exchange rate, which facilitated the transition to the single currency.
Since January 1, 2026, Bulgaria has been unable to issue euro banknotes, as these are the responsibility of the European Central Bank, but is authorized to issue euro coins with a Bulgarian national face.
Bulgarian coins are minted in accordance with European Union requirements, under the supervision of the Bulgarian monetary authorities, with the assistance of approved mints.
