Benelux: History, Importance and Relation to the Euro
Benelux: History and Importance in the European Union
Historical origins of the Benelux
The Benelux is an economic union made up of three Western European countries: Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The name "Benelux" is formed from the initials of the names of the three countries.
During the Second World War: The idea of closer collaboration between these three countries arose as their governments in exile sought ways to work together on post-war reconstruction.
Benelux as a precursor to the EU
As mentioned above, Benelux integration influenced the formation of the European Economic Community, which eventually became the European Union.
Today, although the economic importance of the Benelux has been somewhat overshadowed by the enlarged EU, the union remains a successful example of regional cooperation and continues to play an important role in the process of European integration.
Benelux and the Euro
The term "Benelux euro" can lead to confusion, as there is no specific euro for the Benelux. All three countries are members of the European Union and use the euro as their official currency.
