Description

BU Vatican 2022 9-coin set

This set includes the 1 Cent to 2€ coins for the year 2022, featuring the coat-of-arms of Pope Francis I (shield), as well as the 5€ coin on the centenary of the death of Pope Benedict XV.

Giacomo della Chiesa was born in Genoa in 1854 and elected pope in 1914, just three months after being appointed cardinal. He became pope shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. For much of his nearly eight-year pontificate, he made numerous impassioned appeals for an end to the war. On the reverse of the coin, artist Patrizio Daniele has depicted Benedict XV in profile, hands clasped in prayer and the words: "War, an unnecessary massacre". The phrase is taken from a letter written by the Pope in 1917 sent "to the belligerent powers", the Pope inviting them to reflect on their grave responsibilities before God and humanity. He wrote many letters urging them to end the war, but his appeals went unheeded.
