2 Euro Monaco 2025 - Marquisat des Baux
Description:
In 2025, the Principality of Monaco is putting into circulation a commemorative 2 euro coin minted in Belle Épreuve quality, dedicated to the Marquisat des Baux. This exceptional numismatic issue illustrates the princely family's deep attachment to its history and to the territories that have marked its influence. The choice of this theme pays tribute to a major episode of the XVIIᵉ century, when King Louis XIII, in 1642, erected the seigneury of Les Baux into a marquisate for the benefit of Hercule Grimaldi, son of Prince Honoré II of Monaco. With this act, the French Crown officially recognized the loyalty and growing prestige of the House of Grimaldi, which at the time had close ties with the French kingdom.
The Marquisat des Baux, located in Provence, represented a powerful symbol of influence and recognition for the Principality, marking its integration into the diplomatic and territorial game of the time. Although the French Revolution put an end to the administrative existence of this marquisate, the memory of this alliance remains deeply rooted in Monegasque tradition. The title of Marquis des Baux has thus become an honorary inheritance passed on to each heir to the throne. Today, it is held by Prince Jacques, son of Sovereign Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène, ensuring the continuity of a custom that goes back more than three centuries.
Beyond its historical commemoration, this 2 euro Belle Épreuve coin testifies to the expertise and aesthetic standards of Monnaie de Paris, Monaco's traditional minting partner. Every detail of the design is crafted with remarkable precision, highlighting both the richness of Monaco's heritage and the finesse of the engraving. The theme of the Marquisat des Baux is not just a reminder of the past: it embodies the transmission of values, memory and dynastic legitimacy, all constituent elements of the Rocher's identity.
With this issue, Monaco once again reinforces the special place its commemorative coins occupy on the European numismatic scene. Their limited edition, exceptional minting quality and historical roots make them sought-after by collectors the world over, while contributing to the dissemination of the Principality's cultural and political heritage.
