2 Euro Monaco 2023 - 100 years of Prince Rainier III

Description:

Prince Rainier III, full name Rainier Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi, was born in Monaco on May 31, 1923. He was the son of Prince Pierre of Monaco and Princess Charlotte, née Princesse de Valentinois. Prince Rainier III's birth was an important event for the Principality of Monaco, as he was destined to become the country's sovereign.

Rainier III acceded to the throne of Monaco on May 9, 1949, following the death of his grandfather, Prince Louis II. He reigned for over 56 years, making him one of the most enduring monarchs in modern history.

Under Prince Rainier III's reign, Monaco underwent many transformations and developments. He helped to diversify the principality's economy, notably by developing the tourism sector and encouraging the establishment of international financial companies. He is also known for his romance with American actress Grace Kelly, whom he married in 1956, making her Princess Grace of Monaco.

Prince Rainier III passed away on April 6, 2005, leaving behind a significant legacy and a long line of Grimaldis who continue to rule Monaco.
