Description:
In tribute to James Ensor (1860-1949), who died 75 years ago, the year 2024 has been proclaimed "Year of James Ensor"! To celebrate this great Belgian master, avant-garde artist, colorist, realist, symbolist, "artist's artist", innovator, inspirer, seeker of light, modern artist of international renown, a veritable festival began in his hometown of Ostend in December 2023. With numerous exhibitions at the Mu.ZEE and activities dedicated to Ensor, his works and his influence, Ostend then passes the baton to Brussels. Brussels also offers numerous exhibitions at KBR and
and Bozar. You can also take part in the National Expo and create your own Ensor-inspired work. In autumn, Antwerp takes over with exhibitions at the KMSKA, home to the world's largest collection of Ensor's works, as well as in four other Antwerp museums and many other activities.
A versatile and idiosyncratic artist, James Ensor left a vast body of work including drawings and engravings, still lifes, landscapes, life-size works with masquerades, skeletons and caricatures. His diversity inspired many artists.
To celebrate this special occasion, the Royal Mint of Belgium is issuing a 2½ euro coin depicting two of his most famous works. This coin, minted in BU quality, is available in coincard with two language versions. A free NFT*, a first for a Belgian coin, accompanies this special issue. Discover which of Ensor's works comes to life for you, and enjoy both the coin and this exclusive digital supplement.
The obverse of the coin features the two central figures of the work "Intrigue" in the background, and the famous "Self-Portrait with Flowered Hat" in relief. At the bottom, Ensor's signature and a reference to the Year of James Ensor complete the design.
The NFT*, added to the coincard with the piece, can be claimed by following the steps outlined in the special leaflet or online. There are five different NFTs, each with a varying degree of rarity, and Ensor's works come to life with a "glitch" or a shudder!
