Painted walls, monumental frescoes or small, discreet interventions: these works transform our urban environment into a veritable open-air museum. Numerous initiatives, such as guided tours, festivals and mobile applications, now enable curious locals and tourists alike to discover this spontaneous and vibrant art form.
To pay tribute to this modern artistic expression, the Royal Mint of Belgium has launched a commemorative 2.5 euro coin, in collaboration with one of Belgium's most emblematic graffiti artists: Bue the Warrior. This unique initiative brings together two seemingly opposing worlds: street art, which is essentially ephemeral and free, and minting, which is rigorous and long-lasting.
Bue the Warrior entirely imagined the coin's design, its coincard packaging and the accompanying NFT. Two language versions of the coincard are available, reflecting the country's rich cultural heritage. To complement this artistic approach, exclusive digital works by five renowned Belgian artists have been added as free NFTs, enriching the collecting experience.
The front of the coin features a smiling bird, typical of Bue's graphic universe, accompanied by the inscription "Streetart". The whole thing seems to spring directly from an aerosol can of paint, the central element of the design, which underlines the urban and spontaneous origin of this work. The inscription of the issuing country "BE" and the artist's signature complete this dynamic, colorful creation.
By combining numismatics and street art, this initiative offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the collector coin. It's also a great way to showcase local artists while democratizing access to art. This project perfectly symbolizes Belgium's ability to innovate while honoring its creative talents.
