Hasselt, Belgium’s capital of jenever, was first mentioned in 1165. Long part of the County of Looz, the city was later incorporated into the Episcopal Principality of Liège before becoming the current capital of the province of Limburg. Thanks to its strategic location—first along the route connecting Bruges to Cologne, and later near major road and rail routes close to the Albert Canal—Hasselt has maintained its prosperity over the centuries. Its rich architectural heritage, epitomized in particular by the Gothic Saint-Quintin Cathedral and its artistic treasures, bears witness to its fascinating history.
