The Marsupilami was born from the mind of André Franquin, which is clear from the species' "Latin" name (Marsupilamus Fantasii or Marsupilami franquini). The Marsupilami is a soldier, just like the human, but otherwise bears no resemblance to him. This fictional creature is an egg-laying mammal, measuring one meter in adulthood, with a tail around eight meters long and most often with yellow and black spotted fur. It uses its agile tail for everything: catching objects, moving, swimming, eliminating enemies, etc. It originated in the fictional South American country of Palombia. It feeds on fruit, nuts, fleas and piranhas. Its characteristic cry is "Houba Houba!
The Marsupilami first appeared in 1952 in Spirou et les héritiers, a story in the Spirou et Fantasio series. Spirou and Fantasio found the animal on their trip to Palombia and took it with them to Europe. The character was popular, appearing in several of the duo's albums. In 1987, the Marsupilami got his own comic book series, in the 90s two animated series and in 2013 a movie.
The full-color 5 euro coin shows the birthday Marsupilami in the original colors of the albums and is also presented in a slightly different coincard packaging. The difference between the two 5 euro coins is therefore even greater, and it becomes very tempting to order both versions at the same time.
