The Brillant Universel BU Latvia 2025 coin set celebrates the historic region of Selonia (Sēlija). Mentioned as far back as the 13th century, Selonia occupies a special place in Latvia's national memory. In 2023, its coat of arms and carmine-white-foam flag were officially adopted, marking a major step in the recognition of its identity. The coat of arms, designed by heraldic artist Edgars Sims, features a silver stag on a red background, a symbol of nobility, strength and pride. Its majestic stance reflects the dignity and indomitable spirit of the Selonian people.
The 2 euro 2025 commemorative coin pays tribute to this regional emblem with a refined design. The silver stag is the central symbol, surrounded by a sober design that highlights the beauty of the motif. This issue closes the series devoted to Latvia's five historic regions - Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Selonia - underlining national unity through cultural diversity.
