5 x 2 Euro commemoratives Germany 2025 - 35 years of German Reunification
Description:
German Reunification is one of the most significant events of the late XXᵉ century and a powerful symbol of freedom and unity in Europe.
After decades of separation between the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the West and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the East, November 9, 1989 marked a historic turning point with the unexpected opening of the Berlin Wall, a barrier of concrete and wire erected since 1961. This day remains engraved in the collective memory as the moment when thousands of East German citizens freely crossed the border, heralding the end of the division.
Less than a year later, on October 3, 1990, Reunification was officially proclaimed: Germany regained its territorial and political unity. This event, a real stroke of luck in German history, would not have been possible without the courage and determination of the East German people, whose peaceful mobilization had shaken the regime.
But while political unity was achieved in record time - just 328 days after the fall of the Wall - internal unity was a longer, more complex process. East Germans had to face major social and economic upheavals, while West Germans continued their lives in relative continuity. These differences are still perceptible today, but the attachment to a united Germany has become a matter of course shared by the vast majority.
In 2025, the 35ᵉ anniversary of this historic event is a reminder that unity and freedom cannot be taken for granted. They must be protected, nurtured and constantly reaffirmed, as is also emphasized in the preamble to the German Basic Law, which itself celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2024.
The commemorative 2 euro coin thus illustrates not only the memory of a founding moment for Germany, but also a universal message: that of the citizen force capable of changing the course of history.
