At the heart of this coin is a graphic tribute to the 175th anniversary of the Frankfurt Constitution, also known as the Constitution of St. Paul's Church. This constitution embodies a landmark moment in German political history, symbolizing the first attempt to establish a unified democracy in Germany. Although it was never officially implemented, due to various political constraints and resistance at the time, its influence is undeniable. The fundamental rights it promoted, including freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and other civil liberties, were considered revolutionary and served as the basis for the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany adopted after the Second World War, in 1949.
The Constitution of St. Paul's therefore represents much more than a historical document; it symbolizes the aspiration to a nation founded on democratic principles and human rights. The engraving 'PAULSKIRCHENVERFASSUNG' on the upper part of the coin underlines the importance of this document in German history. The code 'D', for Deutschland (Germany), and the mint mark, represented by one of the letters A, D, F, G, or J, indicate the issuing country and mint respectively, while the vintage '2024' marks the year of this special commemoration.
This coin is not just a celebration of the Frankfurt Constitution; it is a reminder of the continuing evolution of democracy in Germany and the importance of preserving and defending fundamental rights. It symbolizes the road travelled since the first dreams of unity and freedom were expressed in 1849, underlining the enduring value of democratic ideals and the need to protect them.
