Description:
The obverse of the coin features a design by artist-engraver Tobias Winnen commemorating one thousand two hundred and seventy-five years since the birth of Charlemagne. Charlemagne, also known as Karl der Große in German, was an emperor and king of the Franks who lived from 748 to 814. Charlemagne's seal is shown in the design, with the legend "KARL DER GROßE" inscribed above it.
At the bottom of the obverse is the capital letter "D" for Deutschland, which means "Germany" in German. The year 2023 is also present, marking the year the coin was minted. The years of Charlemagne's birth and death are also indicated, 748 and 814 respectively.
On the obverse crown, the twelve emblematic five-pointed European stars point upwards, symbolizing unity and solidarity between the member countries of the European Union.
The reverse of the coin features a map of the European Union on the right-hand side of the heart, which extends over the crown. The map is divided in two by two series of six parallel vertical lines, each marked with a star. To the right of the map, on the crown, is the monogram signature of engraver Luc Luycx.
The legend "EURO" is located to the left of the card and on the card itself, referring to the common currency of the European Union. This commemorative German coin thus honors both Charlemagne's historical legacy and Germany's membership of the European Union.
