Description:
Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909-2012) was an Italian neurologist and scientist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986 for her discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF). Born in Turin, Levi-Montalcini enjoyed an outstanding scientific career, marked by major contributions to the field of neurobiology.she began her medical studies at the University of Turin, under the direction of Giuseppe Levi, where she met Salvador Luria and Renato Dulbecco, two other Nobel Prize winners. Because of the Second World War and the anti-Semitic laws of the time, Levi-Montalcini had to pursue her research in secret, setting up a makeshift laboratory in her home. After the war, she joined Washington University in St. Louis, where she carried out most of her research on the NGF, establishing the basis for understanding how neurons develop and interact. Her work paved the way for numerous advances in the treatment of neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.Apart from her scientific achievements, Levi-Montalcini has also been a fervent advocate of education and women's rights. In 2001, she became a life senator in Italy, continuing her commitment to the promotion of science and gender equality.Rita Levi-Montalcini remains an emblematic figure in Italian and international science, and her legacy lives on through her contributions to medicine and her commitment to society.
