Description A coin celebrating a major event for the entire Catholic community. For believers, 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous; 18 apparitions are said to have taken place between February and July 1858. This coin evokes this event, as well as the visits of the last 2 popes to the site over the past 25 years. The Monnaie de Paris is marking this celebration with a world first: bringing together the effigies of the two popes, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, on a single coin. The face features 4 quarters, 2 of which represent Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. The four quarters are separated by a cross. On the reverse, a representation of the sanctuary of Notre Dame de Lourdes.
