2 EURO 2009 - EMU
Commemorative 2 euro coin series for the 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)
Commemorative 2 euro coin series for the 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)
The series of 2 euro coins marking the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is a collection issued by the European Union countries using the euro currency in 2009. These coins went into circulation on January 1, 2009.
It is important to note that Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican are not among the issuing countries, given their non-membership of the European Union. This series also marked a milestone for Cyprus and Malta, which issued their first €2 commemorative coins.
Technical features
These coins have the same technical characteristics as the other €2 coins, and feature the second version of the common reverse.
Description
The coin's central motif depicts a stylized human figure, with the right arm extended by the euro symbol. The name of the issuing country appears at the top, while "1999-2009" and the translation of the EMU acronym appear at the bottom. The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.
A notable exception is Luxembourg, where the law requires the portrait of the Grand Duke to appear on all coins. As a result, the Grand Duke's portrait is watermarked on the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the presence of the Head of State (King or Queen) on all coins has been amended to take part in this commemoration. However, this change only applies to common issues.
This series of commemorative 2 euro coins celebrates the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, reflecting the unity and diversity of Europe through the euro symbol.
