2 EURO 2007 - TREATY OF ROME

Commemorative 2 euro coin series for the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome

The 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome 2 euro coin series is a collection issued by the European Union countries using the euro currency at the time of issue in 2007. The first coins were put into circulation on March 25, 2007.

It is important to note that Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican are not among the issuing countries, as they are not members of the European Union. This series also marked a historic moment for France, Ireland, the Netherlands and Slovenia, which issued their first €2 commemorative coins.

Description

The coin's central motif depicts the treaty signed by the six founding member states, against a background evoking Michelangelo's paving of Rome's Piazza del Campidoglio, where the treaty was signed on March 25, 1957. The translation of the word "EUROPE" appears at the top of the book. The translation of the words "TREATY OF ROME" and "50 YEARS" are inscribed above the design. The year 2007 and the name of the issuing country are inscribed below the design. The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.

An exception is Luxembourg, where the law requires the portrait of the Grand Duke to appear on all coins. Consequently, the Grand Duke's portrait appears as a watermark on the lower left-hand side of the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the presence of the Head of State (King or Queen) on all coins has been amended to take part in this commemoration. However, this change only applies to common issues.

This series of commemorative 2 euro coins celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, a milestone in the history of the European Union, reflecting its unity and prosperity through the design of these coins.
