3 euro Austria 2024 - Yellow Stingray

A fish of many talents, the yellow stingray moves through the water in an unmistakable undulating fashion, glows green when exposed to ultraviolet light and has a nasty, venomous stinger on its tail. But fear not, by projecting ultraviolet light onto the ninth piece in the Luminous Marine Lifeseries , this spectacular phenomenon can be safely recreated at home.
The green glow of the yellow stingray is the result of its ability to reflect light using endogenous substances. The function of this luminescence is unclear, but the stingray may use it to communicate with other members of its species and as a form of camouflage. The yellow stingray, which measures no more than 75 centimetres long, is able to monitor its surroundings thanks to its eyes located at the highest point of its flat, almost circular body. Another safety feature is the sharp, dagger-like tip covered in venomous skin that lies far behind its tail. Used for self-defense, the stingray proves very useful when held in a shark's mouth, when it whips its tail at lightning speed and stabs the aggressor.Coin designThetwelve magical sea creatures from the Luminous Marine Lifeseries are depicted in silhouette on the obverse of the coin. Air bubbles rise between them and a tail fin disappears beneath the waves on the right. On the reverse, a wide band reminiscent of an old-fashioned porthole frames an aquatic scene with a yellow stingray in the center.Along with the other pieces in the Luminous Marine Lifeseries , the Yellow Stingray aims to vividly demonstrate the beauty and vitality of the underwater world.
