Description:
One of the world's leading opera, theater and classical music festivals, the Salzburg Festival celebrates its centenary in 2020. With opera, theater and classical music concerts, the Salzburg Festival offers a wider range of cultural variety than any other. To celebrate this major cultural event, which is constantly reinventing itself, we've come up with a particularly innovative piece.
On August 22, 1920, director Max Reinhardt staged Hugo von Hofmannsthal's morality play Jedermann for the first time on Salzburg's Domplatz (Cathedral Square), thus founding the Salzburg Festival. Since 1926, the play has been a permanent fixture on the festival program, a tradition interrupted only under the Nazi regime. Those who staged or directed Jedermann on Salzburg's Domplatz reached the pinnacle of their careers.
In addition to Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, composer Richard Strauss also helped found this magnificent celebration of the performing arts, which soon became established and world-famous. In Salzburg, the best is often not enough. This gives the festival a cultural relevance that comes from its strength of tradition, but also allows it to explore new directions and put the avant-garde at the center. This very special centenary coin is avant-garde itself. With an obverse that has the appearance of a plate with a flat interior, a coin of this type has never been minted before. We think it does justice to the Salzburg Festival.
