This two-euro coin is dedicated to Estonia's national flower, the cornflower (Centaurea cyanus). This issue is part of a series of coins depicting Estonian national symbols. Adopted as the national flower in 1968, the distinctive blue cornflower is featured on this commemorative coin.
The coin features a stylized cornflower flower tilted towards the viewer, in its natural habitat of a windswept grain field. The center of the cornflower features an eight-pointed motif, an Estonian folk design symbolizing luck and love, frequently found in traditional motifs.
One million of these coins were minted, including 12,000 in BU quality (brilliant uncirculated), sold on a coin card. The coins were minted by the Mint of Finland. The specially designed two-euro coins are legal tender throughout the euro zone, and will be put into circulation via banks and stores.
The coin was designed by Kaupo Kangro, an architect by profession who also designs coins. Kangro has taken part in several design competitions, including those organized by Eesti Pank for the creation of coins.
