2 Euro Croatia 2024 - Varazdin Castle

Description

The national side of the commemorative coin features the main motif of the fortress "Old Town of Varaždin". This motif is complemented by inscriptions, including the issuing country "HRVATSKA" (Croatia), the year of issue "2024", and the name of the fortress "STARI GRAD VARAŽDIN". These inscriptions are arranged in a circle along the edge of the coin's core. The coin's outer ring features the 12 stars of the European flag, symbolizing the European Union. The coin's edge bears the inscription "O LIJEPA O DRAGA O SLATKA SLOBODO", taken from the Hymn to Freedom in the work "Dubravka" by 17th-century Croatian writer Ivan Gundulić.

The Old Town of Varaždin, located in northern Croatia, is renowned for its well-preserved Baroque architecture and rich historical heritage. This historic center is dominated by its imposing castle, known as Stari Grad, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, Varaždin has been an important cultural and political center, becoming briefly the capital of Croatia in the 18th century. Today, the city is famous for its museums, classical music festivals and annual carnival, which attract visitors from all over Europe. The cobbled streets, colorful palaces and manicured gardens make Varaždin a picturesque and charming destination, bearing witness to the elegance of the Baroque era.
