Croatia's commemorative 2 euro coin planned for 2024 pays tribute to Marko Marulić, a major figure in Croatian literature, on the 550ᵉ anniversary of his death. Marko Marulić (1450-1524) is often considered the "father of Croatian literature" for his significant contributions to his country's culture and language. He is best known for his works in Latin and Croatian, which reflect a profound humanist erudition, as well as an attachment to Christian values.
Marko Marulić lived in Split, a town on the Dalmatian coast. He wrote in the context of the Renaissance, during which classical and humanist influences were at their height. His most famous works include Judita, an epic poem written in the Croatian language and based on the biblical story of Judith. This text is particularly noteworthy for its use of Croatian at a time when most writers in the region wrote mainly in Latin or Italian.
The inner part of the coin features a profile of the head of Marko Marulic, the famous Croatian Christian writer and humanist. On the upper right, the legend "MARKO MARULIC". In the lower part, the name of the issuing country and the year of issue "2024".
