3 Euro Austria 2025 Unc - Firefly Squid
Tenth coin in the "Underwater Life" series dedicated to marine creatures
This collection of 12 coins, featuring various ocean animals, is issued at a rate of one coin per quarter between 2022 and 2025. Partially colored and endowed with a unique feature, they reveal fluorescent effects under UV light: the species represented light up, creating a captivating play of light.
The central part of this tenth piece features the firefly squid, a bioluminescent organism. Its body is covered with photophores, tiny luminous structures on its mantle, head, arms and tentacles. When they emit a bluish glow as a group, they offer a fascinating spectacle. Every year, between March and May, these squids swim up from the depths to the shores of Toyama Bay in Japan to lay their eggs, transforming the sea into a glittering tableau.
Equipped with ten arms, two of which are elongated tentacles, the firefly squid uses the other eight, covered with suction cups, to guide its prey towards its mouth. Its ability to propel itself rapidly by expelling water makes it a formidable predator. The underwater scene is framed by a ring reminiscent of an antique porthole. At the top of the coin, the animal's name in Austrian, "LEUCHTKALMAR", and the year 2025 are engraved.
The reverse of the coin features a design common to the entire series: a composition bringing together the twelve featured species. These include: a blue-ringed octopus, a shark, a mollusc, a lophiiform fish, a scleractinian coral, a yellow ray, a blue surgeon fish, a dwarf cuttlefish, an Antarctic krill, a firefly squid, a pelagic jellyfish and a devil scorpionfish. Between these marine figures, stylized motifs illustrate the underwater world. It also features the issuing country, "Republik Österreich", and the face value of 3 euros.
Each of the animals featured in this collection is distinguished by a unique luminous ability. They glow, sparkle and change intensity according to their environment, adding a magical touch to this exceptional numismatic series.
