The devil scorpionfish, sometimes nicknamed the false stonefish, is a fascinating creature of the warm seas. Known as one of some 180 marine species capable of biofluorescence, this mysterious predator adorns itself with astonishing colors that transform under the effect of ultraviolet light. The twelfth and final coin in the "Vie Marine Lumineuse" numismatic series pays tribute to the wonders of the underwater world through unique luminous effects.
Found in the Red Sea andtropical Indo-Pacific, the devil scorpionfish can be recognized by its stocky body, slightly arched back and 45 rows of vertical scales. Its large mouth contrasts with small eyes high up on its head, giving it a fearsome appearance. Spotted and camouflaged, it is able to blend into the sea bed, often rocky or sandy, at depths of between 1 and 70 meters. A solitary predator, it waits motionless for its prey to pass before sucking it in with a single mouthful, swallowing its victim whole thanks to a lightning-fast suction system. Its venomous dorsal spines are a reminder not to underestimate this reef fish.
The reverse side of the Rascasse Diable piece illustrates this marine atmosphere with a meticulous composition: a stylized porthole frames the scene, highlighting the silhouette of the rascasse in its natural environment, surrounded by colorful corals and a school of fish. The innovation lies in the UV fluorescent effect: under a black light, the color of the scorpion fish evolves from light reddish-brown to bright red, perfectly imitating the biofluorescence observed in the living species. On the obverse, all twelve creatures from the "Luminous Marine Life" collection are represented in silhouette, accompanied by bubbles and marine details that recall the series' aquatic theme.
With this piece dedicated to the devil scorpionfish, the "Luminous Marine Life" series ends on a spectacular note, celebrating not only the mysterious beauty of this marine animal, but also the richness and vitality of tropical ecosystems. A true collector's item for numismatic and nature enthusiasts, it combines art, technological innovation and homage to the underwater world, offering collectors a unique visual experience.
