From July 1 to December 31, 2026, Ireland will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union for the eighth time. During this six-month term, the country will coordinate the Council’s work, organize meetings among member states, and help forge compromises on major European issues. This presidency is guided by the motto “Strength with unity” and places a central focus on Europe’s competitiveness, shared values, and security. Council of the European Union
To mark this major institutional event, the Central Bank of Ireland is issuing a commemorative 2-euro coin intended for circulation. Its national design features the official logo of the Irish Presidency, a dynamic composition evoking growth, movement, and cooperation among the peoples of Europe.
The design is built around several spiral-shaped arms. Each arm comprises 27 discs representing the 27 Member States of the European Union. The open space in the center forms a five-pointed star, directly inspired by the European flag. The common side features a map of Europe along with the face value of 2 euros. Like all coins of this denomination, the coin has a bimetallic structure combining a gold-colored central core with a silver-colored outer ring. It measures 25.75 mm in diameter, weighs 8.5 grams, and is 2.20 mm thick.
Limited to just 500,000 pieces, this issue has a relatively small mintage for an Irish coin intended for circulation. It is offered in UNC (Uncirculated) condition and serves as a numismatic testament to Ireland’s role in European integration in 2026
