10 euros BE 2024 - Notre Dame Cathedral

Description

This uniquely shaped coin pays tribute to Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, a symbol of Gothic architecture. The inner part depicts the building in its purest form, inspired by the contours of an ogival bay decorated with quatrefoils, typical of the Gothic style. Rather than adopting a rectangular format, the Monnaie de Paris chose to capture the cathedral's elegance through this bay, with Eugène Viollet-le-Duc's rebuilt spire as the mullion, and the new statue of the cockerel on top, created during the reconstruction work. The ogive bay also refers to the building's emblematic stained glass windows. The face value and vintage, symbolizing Notre-Dame's reopening to the public, are inscribed on the cathedral's façade.

The reverse of the coin takes us inside the cathedral, revealing the renovated choir with its new liturgical furnishings. The frame of Notre-Dame can also be seen, a complex tangle of wooden trusses, faithfully representing the rebuilt frame identical to the original. Joaquín Jiménez's signature and the word "RF" appear on this side.

Built in the 12th century at the instigation of Bishop Maurice de Sully, Notre-Dame de Paris is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. At once a religious, historical and cultural monument, it has witnessed many significant events in French history, such as Napoleon's coronation and the marriage of Marguerite de Valois. After falling into disrepair during the revolutions, the cathedral was restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc. Today, it remains a place of pilgrimage, inspiration and admiration for millions of visitors worldwide.
