The history of the Louvre takes root in 1190, under the reign of Philip Augustus. At that time, it was a military fortress intended to defend Paris against invasions. Over time, the building evolved and transformed into a royal residence, notably under Francis I, who initiated significant works to make it a sumptuous residence. It was only in 1793, after the French Revolution, that the Louvre opened its doors as a public museum, making a collection of artworks available to all.
Today, its galleries house treasures spanning several millennia and originating from civilizations extending from the Americas to the far reaches of Asia. With 8.9 million visitors in 2023, it remains the most visited museum in the world. Among its most iconic pieces are the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, the Seated Scribe, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and the Code of Hammurabi.
The face of this coin, named Louvre Museum, highlights the Perrault Colonnade, the East facade of the palace facing the Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois church. This architectural part harmoniously integrates into the overall design, which also features the RF emblem, the year of minting, and the mintmark. In the background, the famous Louvre Pyramid stands out against a grid pattern, echoing its contemporary structure.
