Description

2 euros France 2025 Fine Proof - Musée du Louvre

The history of the Louvre dates back to 1190, under the reign of Philippe Auguste. At the time, it was a military fortress designed to defend Paris against invasion. Over time, the building evolved and metamorphosed into a royal residence, notably under François I, who undertook major works to turn it into a sumptuous residence. It wasn't until 1793, after the French Revolution, that the Louvre opened its doors as a public museum, making a collection of works of art available to all.

Today, its galleries contain treasures spanning several millennia, from civilizations stretching from the Americas to the far reaches of Asia. With 8.9 million visitors in 2023, it remains the world's most visited museum. Among its most emblematic pieces are the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, the Crouching Scribe, the Victory of Samothrace and the Code of Hammurabi.

The front of this coin, named Musée du Louvre, highlights Perrault's Colonnade, the palace's eastern façade facing the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois. This architectural element blends harmoniously into the overall design, which also features the RF symbol, the year of minting and the different coins. In the background, the famous Louvre pyramid stands out against a grid background, echoing its contemporary structure.
