The centre of the coin illustre a silhouette humaine stylised whose the bras left is extended by the symbol of the euro. The initiales ΓΣ of the artist appear under the symbol of the euro. The name of the issuing country appears in the language nationale in the part upper, tandis that the indication 1999-2009 and the acronyme UEM traduit in the language nationale apparaissent in the part lower. The coin's outer ring depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
