Raili and Reima Pietilä: Two Leading Figures in Finnish Architecture

Both trained at the Helsinki University of Technology, Reima Pietilä earned his architecture degree in 1953, followed a few years later by Raili Paatelainen in 1956. Their collaboration took on particular significance in the early 1960s, a period during which they developed a highly personal approach to architecture.

The couple, who married in 1963, refused to view a building in isolation from its surroundings. The topography of the site, vegetation, climate, light, and materials became integral elements of their projects.

This approach gave rise to architecture with expressive and often organic forms. Rather than imposing a structure on the landscape, the Pietiläs sought to establish continuity between built spaces and their natural surroundings.

From Dipoli to the Kaleva Church

Among their most iconic works is Dipoli in Espoo, a major project developed beginning in the 1960s for the Student Union of the Helsinki University of Technology. Its irregular volumes and integration into the terrain particularly well illustrate the couple’s architectural philosophy.

The Kaleva Church in Tampere is another essential work associated with the Pietiläs. Its monumental and instantly recognizable architecture reflects the formal freedom that characterizes their work.
