2 Euro Belle Epreuve Greece 2025 - 200 years since the death of Laskarina Bouboulina
Description:
Laskarína Bouboulína, a heroine of freedom
Born in 1771 on the island of Hydra and later settled in Spetses, Laskarína Bouboulína grew up in a maritime environment. Her father having died in Ottoman prisons, she was marked by Turkish domination from an early age. Married twice and soon widowed, she inherited a considerable fortune and a fleet of merchant ships, which she chose to use for a far greater cause: Greek independence.
In 1821, during the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire, she armed several vessels at her own expense, including the famous Agamemnon, a feared warship. She took an active part in naval battles and the blockade of strategic cities such as Nafplio and Monemvasia. Bouboulína also financed the troops and supported the insurgents on her own, becoming one of the few female fleet commanders in modern history.
Her courage and leadership earned her recognition as honorary admiral of the Russian fleet, a rare distinction for a woman at the time. However, her fate was tragic: in 1825, during a family dispute, she was shot dead on the island of Spetses.
Today, Bouboulína embodies not only Greece's fight for freedom, but also the emancipation of women in a male-dominated world. Statues, museums and now this commemorative coin perpetuate her memory, making her a timeless figure of patriotism and feminine courage.
