In 2025, Greece is issuing a commemorative 2 euro UNC coin to celebrate the 100ᵉ anniversary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis (1925-2021), world-renowned composer and prominent political figure.
Theodorakis left an indelible mark on Greek and international culture with his musical works, ranging from popular songs to large orchestral compositions. His name remains attached to legendary film scores such as Zorba the Greek, Z, Electra and Serpico. His political commitment and active role during the Colonels' dictatorship also made him a symbol of resistance and freedom.
