Description: Crete enjoyed a period of autonomy from 1897 to 1913.
From the mid-17th to the late 19th century, Crete was a province of the Ottoman Empire. The 19th century was marked by numerous revolts by the Cretans, who wanted an end to Ottoman domination of the island. While the Balkan regions of the Ottoman Empire (Bulgaria, Romania, etc.) fought for their independence, Crete wanted to become part of Greece. In 1897, the island became autonomous, but remained under the suzerainty of the Sultan and the protection of the great European powers.
This period of autonomy lasted until 1913, when, following the First Balkan War, the island was officially united with Greece.
