Cattle farming and dairy production have long formed part of Latvia’s agricultural landscape. Rural farms and milk processing remain important elements of the country’s food economy.
Milk, butter, cheese and other dairy products are also closely connected with traditional agricultural and culinary practices.
The 2016 coin chooses a deliberately everyday agricultural theme rooted in Latvia’s rural life.
Historical and cultural context:
Latvia's euro series combines the Latvian Maiden, a historic motif from the national currency, with the country's coat of arms. It therefore connects the contemporary euro with the monetary iconography used by Latvia before joining the euro area in 2014.
